Saif Rehman Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 Can any help me and give advice on ways to increase to bhp/power of a 2001 Y reg 2.3L Zetec? Stick a bigger engine in it! Can you more specific - a 2.3l should have roughly 145bhp, which in my opinion is more than enough power unless you are having problems. Quote

Its got a full service histroy everythingis fine engine wise just feels as though it could do with a bit more low down grunt. Quote
gregers Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 dont forget your trying to propel nearly 2 tonns of metal,IT AINT A SPORTS CAR.  :D :D Quote

I know exactly what you mean, i recently towed my 24ft caravan around the uk with mine, mine is LPG'd and to say it was flat is an understatement, i dream of a turbo and on the hills thank god for first gear and a handbrake . Kellymillie, unfortunately it's still to vague of your dillema you describe. The only thing i can suggest is to take your car along to Fords or to an independent garage who has the relevant equipment to run a full diagnostic check-up. Saif Rehman Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 dont forget your trying to propel nearly 2 tonns of metal,IT AINT A SPORTS CAR.  :46: ;) But gregers, the car pumps out nearly 145bhp so it shouldn't be a slouch, a full diagnostic check-up should reveal any problems. If the OP would kindly report back, it would much appreciated. Quote
mikej Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 (edited) Quote: easyBUY A DIESEL You must be joking no thanks i need reliability, i'm thinking of going back to the old Volvo,s again, a nice V70 T5 with a lpg conversion with a little remap that's 300+ horses and good mpg when on the LPG. Love the galaxy but need more power for towing, maybe a 2.8 24v Gal with gas conversion would do it, don't know if these are tunable ? Quote : But gregers, the car pumps out nearly 145bhp so it shouldn't be a slouch, a full diagnostic check-up should reveal any problems. Believe me they are slow, just too heavy! they will happily cruise at 90 all day but it's the getting there, o to 60 in minutes not secs. Edited September 3, 2009 by mikej Quote
sepulchrave Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 O.P. No. The I4 is a crappy old engine, nothing like the Zetec or the Duratec. Quote
gizmo.john Posted September 4, 2009 Report Posted September 4, 2009 O.P. No. The I4 is a crappy old engine, nothing like the Zetec or the Duratec.my 2.3 mk 1 has lots of torque tows a caravan around north wales with now problems and on the hills it just keeps going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
Saif Rehman Posted September 4, 2009 Report Posted September 4, 2009 I find it hard to believe that a car which has 2.3l engine churning out nearly 145bhp can be called 'sluggish', so i investigated further: According to Parkers Guide the info is: Engine Size 2295 cc Cylinders 4 0-60 mph 12.3s Power Output 142 bhp Valves 16 Torque 203 Nm 150 lb-ft Top Speed 123 mph As opposed to the engine fitted in my car: Engine Size 1896 cc Cylinders 4 0-60 mph 13.7 s Power Output 113 bhp Valves 8 Torque 310 Nm 229 lb-ft Top Speed 113 mph And i certainly don't find my car sluggish, ok, my car does have more torque but in regards to the 0-60 and top speed, then the 2.3 petrol is faster than my 1.9tdi. P.S. I'm assuming the OP has a manual, if auto then the figures of 0-60 increase by 1.4s and top speed less 3mph. Quote
mikej Posted September 4, 2009 Report Posted September 4, 2009 145 BHP is nothing for a car this heavy it's all about power to weight . I was actually joking with regards the 0-60 mind ! As for towing it's torque not bhp and of course the turbo on the diesel helps somewhat , i can only assume your van is either lighter, smaller or the hills are not as long and steep. Although mine is gassed it makes little or no difference if i run on petrol when towing. Years gone by i had a sierra ghia with the same twincam engine 145bhp, overall performance was ok and it was easy to drive in most conditions but not fast by any means.... Quote
Saif Rehman Posted September 4, 2009 Report Posted September 4, 2009 i can only assume your van is either lighter, smaller or the hills are not as long and steep. Actually the 2.3l is lighter (1669kg) as opposed to the 1.9tdi (1724kg), i regulary chug up and down the M8/M74/M6 fully laden very merrily at well above the speed limit (sometimes) ;) Since i live in Scotland, i can quite confidently say that we have the best hills in the UK! :D We wait and see if the OP returns to shed some light. Ok, so you love your Gal... ;) It's still a crappy old engine and totally unsuitable for tuning, which is what the O.P. asked about. Try and avoid gushing in tech. sec. if poss. Ta. :D Quote

snapper Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 If you are towing it's torque you want, it will make a big difference on how the car and van feel.No easy way to tune an engine without changing things like cams and head then you would probably move the power higher up the rev range, no good for towing. Your only real options unless changing to a bigger engined car or a turbo diesel is to get the engine into the best condition you can, plugs leads etc, then a free flow inlet filter with cold air feed and a chip upgrade but specify more torque. Weight is your enemy but if you tow a van and have 4 or more peopl then you have probably and extra 1000Kg to haul.54 BHP per ton a Corsa has twice that Quote
